A dental implant is a small titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Once integrated with the bone, a crown, bridge, or denture is attached on top to restore the appearance and function of a missing tooth. Implants are widely regarded as the closest alternative to a natural tooth.
Most adults in good general health are suitable for implants. Key factors include sufficient jawbone density, healthy gums, and no uncontrolled medical conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes. A full assessment including X-rays or a 3D CBCT scan is required to determine suitability. If bone volume is insufficient, bone grafting may be carried out before or during implant placement.
The full process typically takes between three and nine months from initial consultation to final crown placement. After the implant is placed, a healing period of three to six months is required for osseointegration (the implant fusing with the bone) before the permanent crown is fitted. In some cases, a temporary tooth is provided during this period.
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and most patients report feeling only pressure rather than pain. Post-operative discomfort is usually mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. Sedation options are available for anxious patients.

There are two approaches: internal (less invasive, for smaller amounts of bone) and external (for larger augmentations).
